Biographies

Professor and Co-Vice-Chair of Mechanical Engineering,
University of California, Santa Barbara

Dr. Kimberly Turner's interests involve many areas of microsystems, especially dynamics and characterization, and applications utilizing interesting dynamics. In 1994 she earned her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. She received her Ph.D. (1999) in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University, where she did primarily MEMS-based work. She joined the department of Mechanical & Environmental Engineering at UCSB in August 1999, where she is continuing her research in the areas of MEMS and nanosystems, as well as serving as department Vice-Chair, and co-leader of the Sensors Team in the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies. Her research group consists of 8 Ph.D. students and 3 undergraduate researchers. Dr. Turner is the recipient of the 1997 Varian fellowship award, an NSF graduate research fellowship, and a 2001 NSF CAREER award, the 2005 UCSB Distinguished Teaching Award, and the MTU Young Alumni Award . She is the author of over 70 refereed publications. She is a member of ASME, IEEE, ASEE, Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and the American Vacuum Society.
